During the 20th century, there aroused a Cold war which opposed the USA and the URSS. One of the most important last symbols of this cold war is the Checkpoint Charlie. This is considered as the best tourist spot in Berlin. The Checkpoint Charlie, which is considered as the symbol of division of the Germany, is also the strongest monument and important symbol of the World’s political situation during olden days.
In 1964, the Government of East Germany decided to build the Berlin Wall. After short time, John F Kennedy, the US President decided that Berlin’s American forces had to open three checkpoints in the wall. The allied forces and the diplomatic corps entered the Western Berlin through those checkpoints. The American alphabet ‘C’ (as a Charlie) named after ‘A’ (as an Alpha) and ‘B’ (as a Bravo) gave name to the Checkpoint as Checkpoint Charlie. This point is also called as ‘Checkpoint C’.
Many historical incidents and facts took place in this Checkpoint Charlie during the time of Cold war and this is the main reason why Checkpoint Charlie is considered as a historical spot. For e.g., in the year 1961, the American and the Soviet tanks were in a position to face each other here. After constructing this checkpoint, both the American and Soviet Presidents John Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev visited this checkpoint.
Checkpoint Charlie is situated in the Central Berlin, connecting the Friedrichstraße, the Zimmerstraße and the Mauerstraße for which other olden histories state the meaning as “Wall Street”. This checkpoint appears as symbol of the XX century’s Cold War in spy movies and this made it very famous today. It acted as the only gateway for the foreigners who visited Berlin.
In the year 1990, reunification of Germany took place and the Checkpoint Charlie was made to remove during the same year. A replicahause of Checkpoint C was situated in the same place and there was a straight line of bricks on the wall path. Original structure of this checkpoint can be seen at Allied Museum located in a city called Zehlendorf. The remaining part of the Checkpoint C was removed during the year 2000 and we can see some new stores and offices occupying the same place.
It is suggested to visit the museum called Haus at Checkpoint Charlie which was built only after the expansion of Berlin Wall in the 90’s. Its new location is just one yard from the previous original position.
